Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan, Bangladesh’s eminent sculptor and artist, passed away on 20th July 2025. To commemorate his legacy and contributions to the nation’s art and culture, today a remembrance ceremony was organized at the ‘Hamiduzzaman Sculpture Park’, located within the Summit Gazipur 464 MW Power Plants premises in Kodda, Gazipur.

“One day, while sitting in the office, I was talking with Hamid Bhai about sculptures. He proposed, ‘I want to do something big.’ I offered, ‘Come with me. We are building the world’s largest reciprocating power plant, 464 MW in Gazipur. There are many pieces of metal scraps lying there. You can create something with those.’ His gentle hands turned those metal scraps to art and he created Bangladesh’s largest ‘Hamiduzzaman Sculpture Park.’ He was so happy! He worked day and night here, creating and teaching us – how art is born from labour, how art elevates humanity. Because of his presence, today the Summit family has realized that art and industrialization complement each other.”remarked Muhammed Aziz Khan, PBM, Founder Chairman of Summit Group of Companies and a close friend of Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan.

The programme began with a walking guided tour of ‘Hamiduzzaman Sculpture Park’ led by Mrs. Ivy Zaman, wife of Prof Hamiduzzaman Khan allowing the guests to showcase his remarkable works. After visiting the sculpture park, distinguished artists Nissar Hossain, Mainul Abedin; faculty of Charukala Nasimul Khabir Duke, and sculptor Ivy Zaman, reflected on Hamiduzzaman Khan’s immense contribution to Bangladesh’s art and culture sector and his lasting impact on generations of artists. Maj Gen Dr. Monirul Islam Akhand (Retd) ndc, psc, PhD, Managing Director, Summit Power Limited thanked guests for attending the event. The remembrance event ended with a virtual speech delivered by Muhammad Aziz Khan, PBM, Founder Chairman of Summit Group.

The event was also attended by his peers, colleagues and students of Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, Narayanganj Art College and Dhaka Art College, members of the prominent art galleries and Hamiduzzaman’s family. The staff members of Summit who had worked with him closely during the development of the sculpture park were also present.

About ‘Hamiduzzaman Sculpture Park’: Prof Hamiduzzaman Khan (1946-2025) was one of the leading sculptors and artists of Bangladesh, graced with Bangladesh’s highest civilian awards, Ekushey Padak. His talent became apparent through his poignantly expressive group of bronze sculptures on the Bangladesh’s War of Liberation theme – “Remembrance 71”, first created in 1976. The theme reappeared in different forms, styles and media, for the next four decades. His work is almost synonymous with the image of the heroic “Muktijoddha” – Freedom Fighter, Birds and Freedom. In addition to Banga Bhaban, the presidential palace, and other landmarks, his work has found permanent places at the Seoul Olympic Park and other sculpture gardens in South Korea.

The bond of love and friendship between Muhammed Aziz Khan, PBM, Chairman, Summit Group of Companies, and Prof Hamiduzzaman Khan birthed the first sculpture park in Bangladesh with the longest mural, located in the premises of Summit Gazipur 464 MW power plants in Kodda, Gazipur – “Hamiduzzaman Sculpture Park”. Since inauguration in 2019, the park boasts 86 sculptures.
